Formerly part of the Selous Game Reserve and renamed after Tanzania's first president, Nyerere is Africa's largest protected wilderness area — vast enough that most of it remains completely untouched by tourism infrastructure.
Its defining feature is the Rufiji River system, a network of channels and lakes that makes boat safaris a signature activity here, offering a totally different perspective on hippo, crocodile and waterbirds than a standard game drive.
Wild dog, elephant and strong predator numbers round out the wildlife, all explored via boat, game drive, or walking safari — a rare combination of activities in one park.
June to October for the driest conditions and easiest river navigation.
