Known to locals as "Bustani ya Mungu" — the Garden of God — Kitulo protects a rare high-altitude plateau ecosystem rather than the classic big-game savannah most visitors associate with Tanzania.
Sitting above 2,600 meters, the plateau bursts into color during the rainy season, when it becomes one of the largest and most important wildflower displays in tropical Africa, including dozens of rare orchid species.
This is a destination for botanists, hikers and birders rather than game drives, with chances to spot the endangered Kipunji monkey, discovered here only in the early 2000s.
December to April, during and just after the rains, when the wildflower and orchid bloom is at its peak.
