Mikumi is the most accessible of Tanzania's southern parks, reachable by road in half a day from Dar es Salaam, making it a practical option for travelers without time for a longer southern circuit trip.
Its open Mkata Floodplain has drawn comparisons to the Serengeti in miniature, with herds of buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and giraffe visible across wide, grassy plains.
Lion prides are frequently seen relaxing in the open here, and the park borders the much larger Nyerere National Park, forming part of one continuous ecosystem.
June to October, when the floodplain grasses are shorter and animals gather more predictably around remaining water.
