Tarangire takes its name from the Tarangire River, the park's lifeline during the dry season and the reason it hosts one of the largest elephant concentrations in Tanzania.
The landscape is instantly recognizable — golden grassland studded with ancient, swollen-trunked baobab trees, some estimated to be centuries old, giving the park a distinctive, almost prehistoric character.
Herds of several hundred elephants are common in the dry season, alongside large buffalo herds, tree-climbing pythons, and over 550 recorded bird species, making it a favorite for birders as well as photographers.
June to October, the dry season, when wildlife concentrates densely around the shrinking Tarangire River, offering some of the best elephant viewing in East Africa.
