The Serengeti is Tanzania's flagship park and one of the largest wildlife conservation areas on Earth — a name derived from the Maasai word for "endless plains," and an entirely fitting one.
It is best known as the stage for the Great Wildebeest Migration, where over a million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra move in an endless clockwise circuit chasing the rains, culminating in dramatic Mara River crossings each year.
Alongside the migration, the Serengeti holds the highest lion density in Africa, healthy cheetah and leopard populations, and all of the Big Five. Expect classic open savannah dotted with granite kopjes.
Year-round game viewing, but June–October brings the best predator sightings and the famous river crossings, while January–March covers the calving season in the southern plains — a magnet for cheetahs and lions.
