Often overlooked in favor of the bigger northern parks, Arusha National Park sits right on the doorstep of Arusha town, beneath the slopes of Mount Meru, making it perfect for a half or full-day add-on to any itinerary.
It's one of the few parks in Tanzania where walking safaris and canoe trips are permitted, offering a completely different, slower-paced way to experience the bush than a vehicle game drive.
Expect giraffe, buffalo, zebra, and troops of black-and-white colobus monkey in the montane forest, plus flamingo-dusted crater lakes and, on clear days, sweeping views toward Kilimanjaro.
June to February generally offers the clearest skies and best mountain views, though the park is enjoyable in any season given its short access time from Arusha.
