Pangani is one of the oldest Swahili trading settlements on the Tanzanian coast, with a history stretching back centuries as a hub for the ivory and slave caravan routes from the interior.
Today it's a quiet, low-key alternative to the busier islands — a place of mangrove creeks, dhow-building traditions, and crumbling coral-stone ruins that hint at its trading-post past.
The surrounding coastline offers uncrowded beaches, snorkeling trips to nearby reefs, and boat excursions up the Pangani River into the mangroves.
June to October and December to February for the driest, sunniest coastal weather.
