Lake Natron is one of Tanzania's most otherworldly landscapes — a shallow soda lake so caustic and mineral-rich that its waters can turn deep red, set beneath the active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai, the Maasai's "Mountain of God."
Despite its harsh chemistry, the lake is the single most important breeding ground for East Africa's lesser flamingo population, drawing enormous flocks that thrive precisely because the caustic water keeps most predators away.
Beyond the flamingos, the area offers waterfall hikes at nearby Engare Sero, dramatic volcanic scenery, and the option to summit Ol Doinyo Lengai itself on an overnight climb.
The dry season from June to October offers the easiest access roads and the most reliable flamingo numbers.
