Dar es Salaam is Tanzania's largest city and its former capital, a busy Indian Ocean port that most travelers pass through en route to Zanzibar or the southern parks, but which rewards a day of exploring its markets and waterfront.
A short drive north, Bagamoyo was once one of East Africa's most important trading towns and, briefly, the capital of German East Africa, leaving behind a UNESCO-listed old town of Swahili, Arab, Indian and colonial-era architecture.
Together the two towns offer a dose of coastal history and culture that pairs naturally with a beach extension on Zanzibar or Saadani.
June to October and December to February for comfortable, drier city and coastal exploring.
