Just a short boat ride from the lakeside city of Mwanza, Saanane Island is Tanzania's smallest national park — a compact, easily explored island retreat on Lake Victoria.
Once a private zoo, the island retains introduced populations of giraffe, zebra, impala and other plains game that can be viewed on short walking trails, alongside striking granite kopjes and lake views.
It makes an easy half-day escape for travelers passing through Mwanza en route to or from the Western Circuit's more remote parks.
A year-round destination given its small size and easy access from Mwanza.
