Tanzania's smallest national park, Gombe is world-famous as the site of Dr. Jane Goodall's pioneering chimpanzee research, which began here in 1960 and continues today as one of the longest-running wildlife studies on Earth.
Reached by boat along Lake Tanganyika, the park's narrow strip of forested hillside is home to habituated chimpanzee communities that can be tracked on foot with an experienced ranger guide.
Beyond chimps, Gombe holds olive baboon troops, red colobus monkeys, and a lakeshore setting that makes for a memorable stay even between treks.
June to October offers the most reliable trekking conditions, though chimps can be visited year-round.
